My (almost) friend Jeff

Over a year ago a guy I knew was murdered outside of his house.  Jeff was a friend of a friend, but his death/murder upset me as if I had been closer to him.  I think of him a lot, especially when I hear these songs.  As a budding musician, I hope Jeff would appreciate this "mix tape" compiled in his memory.

"Bandstand in the sky," by Pete Yorn from the album "Nightcrawler," 2006
This song is Dave's contribution.  It was originally written in memory of Jeff Buckley, and has been dedicated to Elliot Smith from time to time.  The live version on the Pete Yorn album "Live from New Jersey" is so much better than the mellow one here.

"You can take my life, but I'll never die.  You can tell that's the way I'll survive."

"59 Sound," by Gaslight Anthem featuring Bruce Springsteen from the album "'59 Sound," 2008
The jury's still out on whether or not I actually like this band, but this song reminds me of The Replacements so that's a good thing.  It also makes me think of Jeff's last minutes, and I hope he did get to hear his favorite song one last time...

"Did you hear the old gospel choir when they came to carry you over.  Did you hear your favorite song one last time?"

"Just Breathe," by Pearl Jam from the album "Backspacer," 2009
This song just kills me.  It seems like such a retrospective of an old man's life, and yet Jeff will never have that.  On another note, it makes me sad that those of us who are left (especially those of you who were closer to him) would have to wonder if you loved him enough, and showed him that love.  I don't think he was the kind of guy to keep tabs on that kind of stuff.

"Hold me til I die...Meet you on the other side."

Please email me (acadiawatson@yahoo.com) if you want to add to this list.  R.I.P. Jeff...
